The Future of Aged Care Design

I’m sure all of you know of Bernard Salt and recently I read an article he wrote on the future of aged care design. I’m always fascinated with his findings and observations and I truly believe his messages are right on the money!  I recall a number of years ago when Bernard Salt talked about how we needed to change the language around aged care and yet here we are years later still using the same ‘ole terms.

This current article identified six ways designers could revolutionise an ageing Australia and I’m glad to say that all of these suggestions are principles we already address in our designs, especially when we are talking retirement.

  • Ageing is a spectrum, not a pigeonhole

  • Conceptualise ageing as a series of doors

  • Cultivate non-ageist workplaces

  • Connecting community

  • Think relationships

  • Combat loneliness

We need to address how we are designing places and I believe it is a chance to set a new vision for how life might be lived. Please give me a call anytime if you would like to chat about some great concepts and ideas to make your places a place you want to live.
