Review: Fashion Magazine for Seniors - Tsuru to Kame
How our seniors express themselves is as important as ever. Individuality and self-actualisation doesn’t stop with age, but is as paramount to ongoing health and wellbeing. The devices and methods of self-actualisation that are available to seniors is an area that needs growth. One that we love, however is Tsuru to Kame, which is a fashion magazine for older people. Read our review below.
“My 89-year-old grandma loves talking about fashion and buying new clothes. I have no idea where she gets the information and it´s definitely not in Vogue magazine.” - Juju Kurihara writer for Shashasha. An online store of photobooks which stocks Tsuru to Kame. Shashasha started with the aim of delivering Asian photography to a worldwide audience.
While this is a Japanese publication, it’s worth taking note of as 27% of the population is over 65. With a staggering 61,568 aged over 100! With fewer babies being born in Japan, it highlights an interesting potential for the future with trends being focused more on seniors and an emphasis on their self-expression.
The pages are filled with images of oldies posing, working and living their day to day lives. These are juxtaposed by images of rural Japan, the landscape, small details (like that of a shopping receipt) and quirky graphics. Where elders and street style mix, the pages of Tsuru to Kame are light hearted and fun.
Will we see more publications and media targeting elders in the future? We certainly hope so!
